ADI employs Easy Drive technology in latest SAR ADCs

A portfolio of 16- to 24bit, high precision successive approximation register (SAR) ADCs announced by Analog Device simplify the complex process of designing ADCs into instrumentation, industrial and healthcare applications, claimed the company.

The SAR ADC family features ADI’s patented Easy Drive technology and Flexi-SPI serial peripheral interface (SPI).

The Easy Drive technology maintains device performance while eliminating many traditional system level design challenges, such as strict layout guidelines and rigid digital interface timing requirements, said Analog Devices.

The versatile Flexi-SPI digital interface eases host processor and ADC integration by providing easy-to-meet timing requirements, said the company to accelerate the system design cycle.

There are six members of the pin-compatible SAR ADC family. Of the two that are available now, the 24bit dual-channel, simultaneous sampling, two Megasamples (Msps) per second per channel AD4630-24 features an accuracy rating of 0.9 parts per million (ppm). This is a four fold improvement compared to competitive ADCs, said Analog Devices. The AD4630-24 integrates a reference buffer and all critical decoupling components into a single chip, providing a two-fold improvement in solution density when compared with other, competing products, said the company.

“The combination of performance and speed will lead to more accurate and stable digital control loops that can settle to their final set point with lower latency,” commented Ray Goggin, general manager for ADI’s Electronic Test & Measurement Group. The ADCs simplify the process of designing, evaluating and getting digitally controlled precision instrumentation products to market faster, he added.

The second SAR ADC in the initial release is the single channel AD4030-24.

The SAR ADCs are supplied in a chip scale ball grid array (CSP-BGA) package which integrates all the critical power supply and reference bypass capacitors to reduce footprint and system component count.

The other four SAR ADCs, two dual channel 16-bit models and two single channel 24bit SAR ADCs will be announced soon, said Analog Devices. An evaluation kit is also available.
