Automotive IPD has small footprint; offers flexible control

To meet the requirements of electrical or electronic architectures, Renesas Electronics has introduced the RAJ2810024H12HPD intelligent power device (IPD) for automotive use.

In a conventional distributed electrical / electronic (E/E) architecture, the power supply from the battery is distributed to each electronic control unit (ECU) via long, thick wires from a power box consisting of mechanical relays and fuses. IPDs have a longer life and are maintenance-free compared to mechanical relays, so they can be placed anywhere in the vehicle, said Renesas.

As the automotive industry moves toward centralised or zone-oriented E/E architectures, IPDs offer a means to build efficient and flexible power supply networks because they use shorter, thinner wires. Renesas said its IPD provides a more efficient, safer and smaller solution for power distribution control.

The automotive IPDs feature Renesas’ power MOSFET process.

“We are very pleased to launch a new generation of automotive IPDs featuring our new power MOSFET process,” said Akira Omichi, vice president of Renesas’ automotive analogue application specific business division.

The single channel, high side RAJ2810024H12HPD is supplied in a space saving TO-252-7 package (measuring 6.1 x 6.5mm excluding pins). It has low on-resistance (Ron) of 2.3 mOhm at 25 degrees C (typical), current detection at low loads and self-diagnostic feedback by load current sense.

Protection features include load short-circuit, over-heat detection, sense current output and GND open. There is also battery reverse connection protection with self turn-on.

The IPD has an integral charge pump and supports 3.3V / 5V logic interface with low standby current.

The RAJ2810024H12HPD complies with AEC-Q100 and RoHS automotive standards.

The RAJ2810024H12HPD is available today in sample quantities with mass production scheduled in Q1 2024.
