DC/DC converter evaluation board accelerates 100W fast charger design
An evaluation board to accelerate the building and testing of 100W end-to-end fast charger applications based on Silanna Semiconductor’s CO2 Smart Power load converters can be applies to high density USB-PD and QC designs.
The SZDL3105BB-EVB02 buck converter design example is configured for a 5.0 to 20V at 5.0A output. According to Silanna, it integrates all necessary connections to test and evaluate the efficiency and other performance metrics of the Silanna SZDL3105B range of wide voltage, high frequency PoL DC/DC converters.
The SZDL3105BB-EVB02 is pre-configured for operation with inputs from 7.5 to 24V and may be evaluated as a general purpose PoL application or in-circuit with a USB port controller.
There is also a range of compatible daughter boards for the rapid configuration of a variety of USB-PD and QC use cases. Examples include the Weltrend WT6633P (Qualcomm QC2/3/4, USB-PD), Power Integrations CHY103 (Qualcomm QC3) and Cypress CYPD3175 (Qualcomm QC4, USB-PD) controllers.
“OEMs are looking to develop the smallest, lightest, high-power USB-PD and QC fast chargers within tight time-to-market deadlines,” says Ahsan Zaman, Silanna Semiconductor’s director of product marketing. A fast evaluation of the buck converters in a variety of different scenarios helps to reduce the time from design and prototyping to final production, he added.
The SZDL3105BB-EVB02 evaluation board has a programmable switching frequency of up to 2.0MHz, operates at 95 per cent peak efficiency and has under-voltage, over0current, over voltage and over-temperature protection.
The SZDL3105B DC/DC converter has a footprint of 4.0 x 4.0mm. It operates at a switching speed of 667kHz and delivers up to 5.0A and 100W. It accommodates inputs up to 27V DC and features an extremely low operating power dissipation that enables low no-load power required for regulatory certification.
The internal and external feedback resistor divider flexibility supports custom design, said Silanna, while a momentary internal feedback path allows for controlled start up operation until external USB port controllers can bias themselves and smoothly take over control of the output voltage.
