Ecosine max filters mitigate excessive harmonics, says Schaffner

For use in higher power ranges in demanding drive applications, Schaffner has introduced the ecosine max passive harmonic filter series. These new filters are designed to reliably mitigate excessive harmonics in most demanding applications, says the company.

The ecosine max filter series FN3470/71, FN3480/81, FN3472/73 and FN3482/83 are based on Schaffner’s ecosine platform and are available with versions for 400 and 480V AC, and 50 and 60Hz networks.

They are intended for the higher power ranges (250 to 500kW). The three-choke versions (FN3470, FN3480, FN3472 and FN3482) are designed to achieve up to five per cent harmonic distortion current (THDi) at rated power even when using drives without DC-link choke. The more economical two-chokes versions (FN3471, FN3481, FN3473 and FN3483) are designed to achieve up to five per cent total THDi at rated power if used with drives including at least four per cent DC-link choke. They can also be applied to drives without DC-link choke reaching a THDi of eight per cent.

Schaffner’s ecosine max passive harmonic filter guarantee compliance with the requirements of IEEE-519 and other stringent national or international power quality standards. Using ecosine max filters eases the burden of the electrical infrastructure, explains Schaffner and it is more efficient and reliable, explains Schaffner. In addition, the service life cycle of electrical equipment in the end system is extended and energy costs can be reduced.

Schaffner supplies the industry standard filters for six-pulse rectifiers and motor drives, the ecosine max filter series, designed for compact open panel solutions that are ready to be integrated in standard or customised electrical cabinets. All ecosine max filters are CE-marked, UL listed and RoHS-compliant.

All versions are offered either with a circuit breaker switch protecting the trap capacitor bank or with a trap disconnect jumper to allow any third-party circuit breaker switch to be installed. This protection ensures the operational safety of the device even under all circumstances.

Schaffner provides ecosine max filter series, active and passive harmonic filters, all supported in its power quality simulator SchaffnerPQS3.
