MicroOLED integrates “light AR” into Apple Watches

Believed to be the first augmented reality (AR) solution to enable the real-time display of Apple Watch sensor data, ActiveLook is the technology from MicroOLED which lets runners monitor the new Watch OS 9 running dynamics without breaking their stride, the company announced.

The integration with the Apple Watch enables ActiveLook partners and Apple Watch users to benefit from ActiveLook’s “light AR” for endurance athletes. ActiveLook combines MicroOLED’s near-eye displays with an open platform.

Apple Watch users are able to connect an ActiveLook product to the Apple Watch via Bluetooth, and to create up to three dashboards of real time data (for example running pace, running speed and running power), in addition to the running dynamics metrics introduced in Watch OS 9 (stride length, ground contact time and vertical oscillation).

Placing this data in the runner’s natural field of view, eliminates the need to break stride or change body mechanics to monitor performance. According to MicroOLED, ActiveLook gives endurance marathon runners and triathletes a competitive advantage because they rely on real time metrics, such as pace, in order to train and compete.

According to MicroOLED CEO, Eric Marcellin-Dibon the integration in the Apple Watch has a simplified set up and it is intuitive use via the Apple Watch’s touchscreen and ActiveLook’s gesture control function. Other benefits of ActiveLook are light weight, long battery life, “excellent brightness” and low cost.

ActiveLook 2.0 is now available in the App Store for consumers at no cost but ActiveLook-compatible glasses, presently offered by Engo, Julbo, and Cosmo, are required.

ActiveLook developer’s kits are also available.

MicroOLED specialises in the design and manufacturing of OLED micro displays for near-eye applications (outdoor optical equipment, night vision glasses, ocular equipment for medical devices, augmented reality glasses).
