New high-current DC relays from Omron for utility storage and charging infrastructure

Omron has introduced convenient PCB-mount relays for safety isolation in high-voltage energy-storage systems (ESS) and electric-vehicle fast chargers. The G9KD series are 1500V DC high-power relays with 100A make current and 150A carry/break current used in ESS power-conditioning circuitry and EV-charger control units. They are also used in configuration-switching networks of EV chargers that let vehicles and service equipment adjust the charging power dynamically to maximise access and reduce wait times.

The Omron G9KD relays replace traditional contactors, letting equipment makers extend PCB integration and automated assembly to save time-consuming manual processes and enhance reliability in the field. By handling high carrying and breaking currents at bus voltages of 1000V and above, the new relays power the evolution of grid-connected energy storage and EV battery systems to provide higher capacity and output. This trend is strengthening the momentum behind electrification and the energy transition, bringing tangible improvements such as faster EV charging for extra convenience and shorter wait times, greater energy efficiency, and more affordable services.

Measuring just 60.5mm x 43.5mm x 56.5mm high, the SPST normally open (type 1a) G9KD relays permit more compact equipment designs. The 6mm main-contact gap provides generous isolation distance, while initial contact resistance of less than 4mΩ minimises energy loss and self-heating. A set of 1.0A auxiliary contacts is available as an option, rated for 1.0A for contact-failure monitoring and diagnostic indication, normally closed (type 1b), and conforming with IEC/EN60947-4-1.
