Planar transformers save space in DC/DC conversion, says Bourns
A series of high performance planar transformers the PLN0xx-ED21 series, provide high power density, low loss performance, said Bourns. The transformers are engineered for high frequency, limited space DC/DC conversion designs. They provide high volumetric power density, low loss and enhanced efficiency in a low-height profile design, said the company.
The PLN0xx-ED21 series planar transformers meet today’s high frequency, smaller space power conversion application requirements. These forward converter transformers are designed to deliver outstanding high volumetric power density, low loss and exceptional efficiency in a compact, low-height profile design. Bourns PLN0xx-ED21 series planar transformers are designed for greater reliability due to the enhanced thermal conduction and heat dissipation properties.
Planar-style transformer components increase design flexibility and offers efficiency and power density advantages over conventional wirewound transformer designs due to significantly reduced AC resistance losses, explained Bourns. The transformers provide from 48 to 70W of output power in applications with input voltages ranging from 33 to 57V DC and a switching frequency of 250kHz. They also have low leakage inductance from 0.29 to 0.60 microH and a volt-second time of 81.6 (V-microseconds). The series offers 33 to 57V input voltage, 5.0 to 12V output voltage at 4.0 to 14A output with various turns ratios.
The transformers are intended for power conversion in high density industrial power systems, low profile switched mode power supplies (SMPS), LED lighting applications, battery management systems (BMS), PoE applications and other forward transformer applications.
The planar transformers use standard PWB material for the transformer windings, soldered to an SMT header to create a simple to use, surface mount components for ease of assembly. In addition, Bourns’ custom magnetics product engineers are able to support many modification and customisation requests for this planar transformer series.
The PLN0xx-ED21 series planar transformers are available now and are RoHS-compliant.
