Small RAIN RFID tag and button cells have healthy outlook at Murata

At Pharmapack Europe 2023 (01 to 02 February), Murata will showcase a small RAIN RFID tag and high-drain silver-oxide and mini alkaline batteries for smart healthcare applications.

The RAIN RFID tag enables RFID readers to determine an item’s identity and authenticity in smart healthcare applications. The small yet robust RFID tags can be fitted to metallic and non-metallic surfaces, perfect for use on small items. To avoid any risk of contamination during the drug-filling operations, they can also be embedded into the product, such as pre-filled syringes, vials, and cartridges.

Murata incorporated an antenna in multi-layer ceramic substrates to produce a small and robust RFID tag capable of automatic identification and bulk reading of over 400 units per minute for high throughput efficiency. This capability allows real time identification at full production speeds, preventing any mix-up during drug-filling operations, said Murata. The RFID tags also provide item-level serialisation which limits batch segregation should a defect be found.

Murata is also the inventor of the world’s first mercury-free silver oxide button cell batteries and has now developed High-Drain Mini Alkaline (LR) and silver oxide (SR) batteries. The button cells deliver large current and high pulse discharge current (up to three times higher than conventional SR/LR) for smart medical devices that require large current loads for communication, lighting, camera, small motor, and other use cases. Typical applications include dosing devices, insulin pumps / pens, and capsule endoscopes. The batteries offer a maximum pulse discharge current of 120mA to maintain a minimum of 1.2V at 100ms upon zero per cent depth of discharge (DOD) at 23 degrees C.

Murata’s high precision material mixing technology achieves the high energy density of the High-Drain SR batteries. The use of antioxidant, high-performance separators also contribute to improved storage characteristics, said the company. The batteries are made in Japan and the sealing structure and material offers excellent leakage resistance said Murata.

thanks to Murata’s distinctive sealing structure and special sealing-material treatment. Moreover, they deliver excellent stable discharge characteristics.
