0603-size LEDs are optimised to reduce uneven colour in displays

Rohm Semiconductor has announced the availability of 0603-size (0.6 x 0.3inch) / 1608-size (1.6 x 0.8mm) LEDs. The CSL1901 series is optimised for low light applications and for use in indicators and numeric displays in factory automation equipment (e.g., PLCs) and communication control equipment such as modems and routers.

Although technological advancements in LED elements have resulted in dramatically improved luminous efficiency and increased brightness, the market is demanding LEDs tailored to characteristics in the low current range because higher brightness limits luminous intensity and emission wavelengths in applications where interference with adjacent light emitting parts must be considered.

In response, Rohm has developed the 0603-size LEDs optimised for low current drive in low-light applications using in-house element technology to customise the light-emitting layer of the device.

The CSL1901 series reduces visual variations in brightness and colour under low-light conditions by optimising element characteristics of light emission at 2mA using original device technology. Typically, operating standard LEDs at low currents results in brightness and colour differences that vary from part to part. Compared to existing products (at 2mA), these new LEDs reduce brightness variations by half and colour sifting by 3nm, said Rohm. This minimises design man-hours required for light emission while improving visibility in indicators and numeric displays, claimed the company.

Rohm has announced five colours in the 0603 LED size. The CSL1901 series is in mass production now and available through online distributors Digi-Key, Mouser, and Farnell.

Rohm Semiconductor develops and manufactures a large product range from SiC Diodes and MOSFETs, analogue ICs such as gate drivers and power management ICs to power transistors and diodes to passive components.

The company has manufacturing plants in Japan, Germany, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and China. Rohm Semiconductor Europe has its head office near Dusseldorf serving the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa).
