Bourns shrinks package for resettable thermal cutoff devices

Claimed to be the industry’s smallest thermal cutoff (TCO) devices, Bourns’ Model CB series is 26 per cent smaller than its NR series. The small package makes the CTO devices particularly suitable for smaller smartphone and portable electronics batteries.

The miniature resettable TCO devices are designed for over-temperature and over-current protection of lithium polymer and prismatic cells. The Bourns Model CB Series is the company’s next generation of axial-leaded TCO devices that control abnormal, excessive current virtually instantaneously, up to rated limits.

Although 26 per cent smaller than Bourns’ NR series has the same current carrying capability. The low-profile 0.8mm height and body width of 2.5mm makes this series suitable for smaller batteries in smartphones and portable electronics. The high current carrying capability also makes them optimal for next-generation notebook and tablet PC battery cells, adds Bourns.

The Model CB series offers resistance levels down to 2.2 milliOhms and has current capabilities from 6.0 to 11A at 60 degrees C. There is also a welding projection option.

The miniature, resettable TCO devices are available in four trip temperature options of 72, 77, 82 and 85 degrees C with a ±5 degrees C tolerance. The temperature options can be narrowed further, upon request.

The construction of the CB Series uses a high corrosion resistant bimetal mechanism to withstand most humid environments.

The Model CB devices are RoHS-compliant and halogen-free and available now.

Bourns manufacturers and supplies position and speed sensors, circuit protection solutions, magnetic components, microelectronic modules, panel controls and resistive products.

The company is headquartered in Riverside, California, USA and serves a broad range of markets, including automotive, industrial, consumer, communications, low-medium risk medical equipment and audio market segments.
