DC input, hot swappable power supply is compact

By adding a DC input version of the MPR series power supply, ABB says it has created additional options for customers looking for compact, high density, hot swappable power supplies.  The DC input version joins the existing AC input power supply.

The compact supplies measure 9.0 x 2.15 x 1.57 inches (229 x 55 x 40mm), claimed to be one of the most compact options available today in terms of power supply depth.

The MPR0712TE (AC-input version) and MPR0712DC (DC-input version) medium-power units are interchangeable, offering flexibility in the design of end applications that require both input options. The MPR rectifiers achieve power densities of 23W per inch3 and energy efficiencies of up to 94 per cent at 50 per cent load, achieving an 80 Plus Platinum grade.

The MPR0712TE has a front 90 to 264V AC input, rear 12V DC output and a 700W output. The MPR0712DC allows for a front -44 to -72V DC input and a rear +12V DC output with a 700W output. Both the AC and DC versions can operate over a wide temperature range of -5 to +50 degrees C.

The hot swappable power supplies can be used in 12V distributed power architectures, mid-end and blade servers, networking equipment and attached storage, routers and switches as well as advanced workstations, advises ABB.

Both the AC and DC versions feature a PMBus-compliant I2C communications bus, allowing electrical engineers to integrate monitoring and control capabilities into system designs.

Other features to note are active current sharing, remote sensing ability and a 12V standby output voltage. The MPR0712DC and MPR0712TE also feature built-in over-voltage, over-current and over-temperature protection.

ABB has a history of over 130 years, specialising in connecting software to its

electrification, robotics, automation and motion portfolio. The company operates in over 100 countries.  ABB’s headquarters are in Oerlikon, on the outskirts of Zurich, Switzerland.
