Nexperia says Application Specific FETs improve on MOSFETs

Responding to industry’s demands to maximise performance by defining a new MOSFET product group, Nexperia has defined Application Specific FETs (ASFETs) which feature MOSFETs with optimised parameters for specific applications. Focusing on individual applications means that significant improvements can be offered, says Nexperia.

ASFET families are available for battery isolation, motor control, hot-swap and Power over Ethernet (PoE) applications. Examples of applications for tailored ASFETs are a three to five times improvement in safe operating area (SOA) for hot swap applications and maximum current ratings in excess of 300A for motor applications.

Chris Boyce, senior director for the Power MOSFETs Group at Nexperia, said: “As designers push the boundaries of performance, it is crucial to understand how the MOSFET will be used in the application. There are 100+ parameters on a regular MOSFET datasheet but usually only a few are critical in each project.  However, as the applications change, so do the critical parameters”. Nexperia determines the performance of every element of its products, for example the core silicon technology, the chip design, the package and the manufacturing and test procedures. Based on individual application requirements, designers can choose to optimise the parameters that matter most in a particular use case, often at the expense of others of less relevance, says Nexperia.

The company has announced that it will release a family of automotive products to expand the ASFET family, with guaranteed repetitive avalanche performance for driving inductive loads.

Nexperia has an extensive semiconductor portfolio, which includes diodes, bipolar transistors, ESD protection devices, MOSFETs, GaN FETs and analogue and logic ICs.

The company is headquartered in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, and annually ships more than 90 billion products, meeting the stringent standards set by the automotive industry. These products are recognized as benchmarks in efficiency – in process, size, power and performance — with industry-leading small packages that save valuable energy and space.

Nexperia has over 12,000 employees across Asia, Europe and the US.
