Rad-tolerant oscillators are prepared for LEO

Oscillators for low earth orbit (LEO) applications can withstand shocks up to 100,000g. The Statek range of 30k rad tolerant CXOXLPNR surface mount oscillators are high shock, low phase noise oscillators housed in hermetically sealed ceramic 3.2 x 2.5mm packages with operating temperature range from -55 to +125 degrees C.

The CXOXLPNR oscillators are available from Euroquartz. They deliver a low voltage CMOS output with typical low phase noise of -165dBc/Hz at 125MHz (20MHz offset) combined with typical low RMS phase jitter of 150fs over 12kHz to 20MHz and low acceleration sensitivity. Output frequencies from 20 to 125MHz are available with supply voltage range from 1.8 to 3.3V ±10 per cent.

For LEO and small satellite applications, the CXOXLPNR oscillators can be MIL-screened for aerospace and defence programmes such as communications/GPS and supplied for use in industrial environments.

Additional specifications include frequency temperature stability of ±100 to ±25ppm (industrial) or ±100 to ±50ppm (military), output load of 15pF, start-up time of five milliseconds maximum, duty cycle of 45 per cent minimum, 55 per cent maximum and first year ageing of 2ppm maximum. The components are supplied in tray packs or tape and reel per EIA 481 and can withstand maximum process temperature of 260 degrees C for 20 seconds.

Statek Corporation is a company based in the US which designs and manufactures high reliability crystals and oscillators. Statek’s core competency is its ability to design and manufacture ultra-miniature resonators in quartz wafers using its patented photolithographic and chemical milling processes. It was founded in 1970 and supplies high shock and high vibration crystals and oscillators for all industries requiring high reliability and extremely robust performance. The oscillators are claimed to have superior shock and vibration, extended temperature ranges, small size and extreme high reliability, for industrial, military, medical, and space industries.

Euroquartz is an independent UK-based manufacturer and supplier of quartz crystals, oscillators, filters and frequency-related products to the electronics manufacturing industry worldwide. The company is AS9100-registered and designs and manufactures a range of frequency control components for OEMs covering a broad spectrum of applications including defence and aerospace, communications, general electronics, computing, control systems and petrochemical industries.
