Murata bundles wireless modules for LPWAN development
With its technology partner, Sentinum, the IoT software specialist, Murata has created a multi-stack development kit for low power, wide area networks (LPWANs).
The Yamori development kit includes selected Murata wireless modules for evaluation of various IoT-related LPWAN application criteria using a single platform, says Murata.
The Yamori kit includes long range (LoRa), narrow band IoT (NB-IoT), Cat M1 (LTE-M) and voice over LTE (VoLTE) RF and cellular protocols. Near field connectivity (NFC) and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) functionality are also included while Sigfox and mioty, the miniaturised IoT system, developed by Fraunhofer IIS, the German research organisation, for industrial wireless data transmission, can be supported by a simple firmware upgrade.
Yamori houses a compact LBAA0QB1SJ LoRa module and an LBAD0XX1SC cellular module in a 63 x 29.3 x 40mm form factor. A Murata CR3677X Lithium coin battery and CT04120 secondary battery are also incorporated, as well as printed antennae. It is, says Murata, a fully-integrated IoT development resource.
Low power operation prolongs battery life with just 1.5 microA (in cellular mode) drawn in hibernation mode. Designers can use the kit to develop solutions that deliver elevated performance parameters, while taking up little space and consuming minimal power, says Murata. It can be used to evaluate smart parking, environment monitoring, smart agriculture, building automation, asset tracking, industrial control, smart metering and emergency service response applications.
The kit means that developers do not have to waste time integrating peripheral elements, such as antennae or a power source. “Consequently, it is possible to move through the prototyping phase within a much shorter timeframe,” said Koichi Sorada, product manager of the IoT Connectivity Europe team at Murata. He added that it also means that design concepts can be adapted, rather than having to start new projects from scratch.
Murata manufactures electronic components, modules, and devices, including ceramic capacitors, resistors or thermistors, inductors or chokes, timing devices, buzzers, sensors and EMI suppression filters. The ceramic capacitor manufacturer also claims to be a world leader in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi modules, board-mount DC/DC converters and a manufacturer of standard and custom AC/DC power supplies.
