Resettable fuse maintains highest safety standards, says Toshiba

Expanding its range of eFuse ICs, Toshibas has announced the TCKE712BNL. It is a function-rich, resettable eFuse, says the company.

The latest eFuse IC is targeted at a variety of consumer electronics goods, including cameras, cordless cleaner and power tools, cleaning robots, server, smart, speaker, thermostats and wireless chargers.

Conventional fuses, such as glass tube and chip fuses, protect power supply lines by breaking if there is excessive current, eFuses are more effective, says Toshiba. They are designed to support repeated use (i.e being automatically reset by an internal logic signal). They therefore offer much faster responsiveness and have a greater breadth of built-in protection functions than conventional, outdated fuses, Toshiba says.

They have on resistance of 53mΩ, a trip time of only 320ns and cover an input voltage range of 4.4 to 13.2V. It is possible to adjust the TCKE712BNL’s over-voltage threshold to fit with the specific application requirements. Protection mechanisms include over-current (also adjustable), over-temperature and short-circuit protection. A flag function transmits an external signal that will alert engineers of possible faults in the circuit design, so they can be addressed early on in the development process. The reverse current blocking feature means there is the scope for the TCKE712BNL to be employed in multiplexed systems

Toshiba’s TCKE712BNL eFuse is supplied in a compact WSON10 package measuring 3.0 x 3.0mm, to minimise board real estate requirements.
