Sealed micro switches endure wet or dusty environments

Two, sealed miniature micro switches from Omron are designed for use in applications exposed to water spray or high levels of dust. The D2GW and D2AW can be used in vending machines, smart meters, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, security systems, heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment, white goods and other applications where space is at a premium.

The Omron D2GW is fully sealed to IP67 and can operate in temperatures of up to 85 degrees C. It is potentially the smallest switch of its type in the industry, said Omron, with dimensions of just 8.3 x 6.5 x 5.3mm.The D2GW is available in a variety of styles, with a choice of mounting structures, actuators and terminal specifications. There are press-fit terminals to enable solder-less PCB installation, as well as solder terminals, PCB terminals and moulded wire leads. The switch’s symmetrical shape with the push button in the centre allows levers to be added in either direction.

The second switch is the D2AW, also sealed to IP67. This is based on Omron’s basic switch and has dimensions of 13.3 x 7.0 x 5.3mm and high insulation resistance of 100MOhm. A version of the switch, the D2AW-R, features an integrated internal resistor allowing the detection of four states: on, off, open circuit and short circuit. The switches are available with solder terminals, spade terminals and moulded wire leads.

Both the D2AW and the D2GW feature a sliding contact construction for quiet operation and high contact reliability, wiping away any dust or other impurities, claimed Omron. Both also have double contacts, to improve reliability.

Omron Electronic Components Europe produces electromechanical PCB relays, as well as components such as micro switches, MOSFET relays, DIP switches, photo micro sensors and connectors. The company’s technology portfolio includes MEMS based pressure, flow and thermal measurement sensors, human face and gesture recognition modules, vibration and tilt sensors.
