SM2264XT-AT is first automotive-grade PCIe NVMe SSD controller, says Silicon Motion

At this year’s Flash Memory Summit, Silicon Motion unveiled the SM2264XT-AT and claimed it is the first automotive-grade PCIe NVMe SSD controller available in the industry.

It uses PCIe Gen 4 technology and a 12nm process technology. Silicon Motion said it is capable of optimal speed and efficiency while guaranteeing robust data protection, high quality of service (QoS) and “unparalleled reliability”.

It is also claimed to deliver a steady performance and responsive handling in automotive SSDs. The controller is equipped with a quad core Arm R8 CPU and supports four lanes of 16Gbit per second PCIe data flow. It also features eight NAND channels with speeds of up to 1,600Mtransfers per second per channel for “exceptional throughput . . . and reduced power consumption,” said the company.

The SM2264XT-AT is its built-in SR-IOV capability. According to the company, this empowers enhanced software functionality and streamlines remote management, allowing support for up to eight virtual machines (VMs). By providing dedicated virtual functions (VFs) for each VM, the SM2264XT-AT maximises SSD resource utilisation while reducing host software complexity and CPU power consumption, making it suitable for the next generation of vehicles with centralised architectures.

The SM2264XT-AT complies to AEC-Q100, ISO 26262 functional safety standards (ASIL-B), IATF 16949 certification for supplier chain compliance and ASPICE compliance SW development process.

There is also a self-encrypting drive (SED) with AES 128/256 and TCG Opal for data security.  The use of 7th generation NANDXtend provides a data retention extension.

Silicon Motion supplies NAND flash controllers for solid state storage devices for servers, PCs and other client devices.  It also supplies eMMC and UFS embedded storage controllers used in smartphones, IoT devices and other applications as well as customised, high performance hyperscale data centre and specialised industrial and automotive SSD solutions. Customers include NAND flash vendors, storage device module makers and leading OEMs.
