Abrasive paste provides thermal management in PCBs

Dispensing pumps are in use for handling highly abrasive materials. Abrasive pastes cause increased wear. If properties such as high viscosity of the materials are then added, many common dispensing systems and technologies, such as piston pumps, reach their limits. They cannot meet the high demands of service life and precision.

Viscotec has carried out tests for a customer using the one-component heat-conducting paste which is extremely abrasive and highly viscous, dispensing it onto a PCB, which demanded the highest accuracy levels.

The dispensing tests show that despite the high viscosity and abrasion of the thermal paste, the individual lines and dots were dispensed very precisely. The speeds of the dispenser and robot were perfectly combined, reported ViscoTec. There was no dripping of the material.

The systems also means less downtime due to less maintenance work and reduced cost on wear parts for the customer. In addition, material waste is minimised and contamination of components, as well as unintentional dripping, are prevented. This in turn ensures fewer rejects, ViscoTec added.

The finished circuit boards are installed in electronic components in the subsequent manufacturing process. The thermal paste helps to support the thermal heat management there and ensures optimum heat transfer to the outside.

For the dispensing tests, a 1-component 3RD8 dispenser with ceramic rotor was used and powered by a ViscoPro-C servo drive. The material was conveyed via a ViscoMT-C cartridge emptying system.

ViscoTec uses the endless piston principle, to reduce wear to a minimum and meet the highest precision requirements. Using the ceramic rotor in addition to ViscoTec’s standard equipment, the service life of the dispensing equipment can be increased many times over, even when dispensing highly abrasive materials, said ViscoTec.

ViscoTec Pumpen- u. Dosiertechnik manufactures systems required for conveying, dosing, applying, filling, and emptying medium to high-viscosity fluids. The company’s headquarters are in Töging a. Inn (Bavaria), Germany. ViscoTec has subsidiaries in the USA, China, Singapore, India and France, with sales partners around the world to complete the international distribution network.

ViscoTec is the single point of contact to deliver all components from emptying to preparing and to dosing. This guarantees successful interaction of all components. All fluids showing a viscosity of up to 7.000.000 mPas can be conveyed and dosed almost pulsation-free and with extremely low shear. ViscoTec offers comprehensive consulting for every application and, if required, extensive tests will be carried out.

Markets served include e-mobility, aerospace, medical, pharmaceutical and food.
