ADC claims to be industry’s fastest for T&M and defence

For the demands of test and measurement for 5G testing and oscilloscopes and defence applications such as direct X-band sampling for radar applications, Texas Instruments has introduced the ADC12DJ5200RF 12-bit ADC.

The ADC is claimed to have the industry’s widest bandwidth, fastest sampling rate and lowest power consumption. The 8GHz ADC12DJ5200RF enables engineers to achieve as much as 20 per cent higher analogue input bandwidth than competing devices, to directly digitise very high frequencies without the power consumption, cost and size of additional down-conversion.

In dual-channel mode, the ADC12DJ5200RF samples at 5.2Gsamples per second and captures instantaneous bandwidth (IBW) up to 2.6GHz at 12-bit resolution. In single-channel mode, the ADC samples at 10.4Gsamples per second and captures IBW up to 5.2GHz.

The ADC12DJ5200RF is also claimed to be the first standalone GSPS ADC to support the JESD204C standard interface. The ADC helps minimise the number of serialiser/deserialiser (SerDes) lanes needed to output data to FPGAs to achieve higher data rates.

The dynamic performance is also claimed to be the highest available across power supply variations, even at minimum specifications, which improves signal intelligence by providing high receiver sensitivity to detect small and weak signals. The ADC also includes internal dither which improves spurious-free performance.

For measurement accuracy, the ADC minimises system errors with offset error as low as ±300 microV and zero temperature drift.

Engineers designing test and measurement equipment can achieve high measurement repeatability using the low code error rate (CER) of the ADC12DJ5200RF, which is more than 100 times better than competing devices, according to Texas Instruments.

At 10 x 10mm, the ADC is 30 per cent smaller than discrete solutions and also requires a reduced number of lanes, to further reduce PCB design size. Power consumption is minimised with heat dissipation and thermal management and 4.0W power consumption.

The ADC12DJ5200RF is pin-compatible with TI’s ADC12DJ3200, ADC12DJ2700 and ADC08DJ3200, to upgrade from 2.7 to 10.4Gsamples per second.

Two evaluation modules, the ADC12DJ5200RFEVM and TSW14J57EVM are available now.
