Advanced Energy adds 48V AC/DC brick converter to AIF family

The Artesyn AIF family of  integrated, intelligent full brick AC/DC converters by Advanced Energy Industries has been expanded with the addition of a 48V module. The AIF11WAC simplifies the design of next-generation telecomms and industrial power architectures, said Advanced Energy Industries.

The AIF11WAC operates with best-in-class efficiencies up to 93 per cent, claimed the company and is a small form factor for the latest 48V power architectures in 5G remote radio head RF, robotics, 3D printing and industrial designs.

Rated for 500W of continuous power and with a wide input range of 90 to 264V AC, the AIF11WAC reduces system size and component count. It has integrated PMBus control and monitoring and an intuitive GUI to simplify power supply optimisation and to enable ongoing system health measurements during operation. The construction is fully encapsulated to support operation in high pollution and harsh environments. It is also suitable for use in systems that require external mounting such as external signage, IP-sealed industrial automation systems, heavy industrial equipment that generates conductive dust and 5G telecomms communication nodes.

“Telecom and industrial applications are transitioning to more efficient 48V power architectures as customers look to deliver improved performance while keeping energy consumption low,” explained Joe Voyles, vice president of marketing, industrial power conversion products at Advanced Energy. The AIF11WAC supports this evolution, reduces component count and simplifies application design, he said.

The AIF11WAC is designed for contact-cooled operation. It features an internal inrush limiting function that is matched to the hold-up function of the module, eliminating the need for external inrush current protection. System size and component count can be further reduced thanks to a 10V auxiliary output that enables low power housekeeping circuitry to be supplied directly from the module rather than a second AC/DC power converter.

There is no minimum load requirement, enabling the module to provide a regulated, isolated 48V output for loads up to 11A. The AIF11WAC also incorporates active current share and start-sync functionality, which simplifies implementation for applications that require two units to operate in parallel.
