Antenna aperture tuners meet demands for 5G applications

To meet the demanding requirements for next generation mobile applications, Skyworks Solutions has announced wideband 16-state antenna aperture tuners, which the company has added to its Sky5 portfolio.

The SKY5−9256-701LF antenna aperture tuner is compact and designed to deliver improved efficiency and enhanced bandwidth coverage, from 600MHz to 6GHz for LTE Advanced Pro to emerging 5G standards, across a range of mobile devices, explains Skyworks.

Antenna tuning has a critical role in maintaining smartphone power efficiency and battery life as signal processing complexity rises with the onset of 5G. Another challenge is embedding more antennae, as smartphone manufacturers add features such as 4×4 multiple-in, multiple-out (MIMO) and 5G new radio (NR). Bezel-less smartphones integrate from four to seven antennae to support future data demand compared with two to four today. At the same time, points our Skyworks, the migration to full screen infinity displays and expanded functionality limit the amount of board space available. Skyworks’ antenna tuners leverage proprietary design and process techniques to help drive antenna performance while meeting stringent linearity demands and size constraints.

The SKY5−9256-701LF advanced aperture tuner features reliable linear operation and extremely low Ron (1.1 Ohm) and Coff (145fF), allowing system designers to recover the 1.5 to 3.0dB gain degradation caused by shrinking antenna sizes. The MIPI-controlled, 16-state capability of the SKY5-9256 tuner also gives engineers the ability to combine arms for even smaller Ron and Coff, says Skyworks. The company says “excellent harmonics” are delivered throughout the operating range, assisting customers with achieving RSE requirements and passing certification.

All of Skywork’s Sky5 solutions support new 5G waveforms and spectrum in addition to enhanced carrier aggregation and dual connectivity (4G/5G). The portfolio includes MIPI interface and customisable architectures for power efficiency with 100MHz CP-OFDM modulation. The portfolio includes:

Skyworks Solutions provides analogue semiconductors for use within the aerospace, automotive, broadband, cellular infrastructure, connected home, industrial, medical, military, smartphone, tablet and wearable markets.
