Automotive-grade miniature aluminium capacitors save board space

Low impedance, automotive-grade, miniature aluminium electrolytic capacitors in the Vishay BCcomponents 172 RLX series, are claimed to deliver higher performance in smaller case sizes than previous-generation capacitors.

The 172 RLX series combines high ripple currents up to 4.9A, high temperature operation to +105 degrees C, and long useful life up to 10,000h in 14 case sizes ranging from 10 x 12mm to 18 x 40mm.

Compared to previous-generation solutions, the AEC-Q200 qualified capacitors offer lower impedance, higher capacitance for a given case size and voltage, and up to 54 per cent higher ripple current at the same capacitance voltage (CV) rating in smaller case sizes. For example, previous generation capacitors offer ripple current of 1,100mA at a CV rating of 1000F / 10V in the 10 x 16mm case size, the 172 RLX series delivers 1700mA in the 10 x 12mm case size. This allows designers to use fewer components to save board space, said Vishay.

The capacitors have radial leads and a cylindrical aluminium case with pressure relief, insulated with a blue sleeve. The 172 RLX series offers rated voltages up to 50V, capacitance from 150 to 15,000 microF, and low impedance down to 0.011 Ohm at +20 degrees C. The devices are charge- and discharge-proof.

The polarised aluminium electrolytic capacitors with a non-solid electrolyte are suitable for smoothing, filtering, and buffering in switch mode power supplies, DC/DC converters, motor drives, and control units for industrial, automotive, telecommunications, audio-video, and electronic data processing (EDP) applications.

Samples and production quantities of the 172 RLX series are available now, with lead times of eight weeks.

Vishay manufactures a large portfolios of discrete semiconductors and passive electronic components for use in the automotive, industrial, computing, consumer, telecommunications, military, aerospace, and medical markets.
