Avnet Integrated offers SMARC 2.0 module for multiprocessing

Described as a “quantum leap” in terms of computing and graphics performance, the MSC SM2S-IMX8 SMARC 2.0 modules is now available from Avnet Integrated.

The module integrates what is currently the most powerful i.MX8 processor family from NXP based on the Arm Cortex-A72/A53 architecture. The i.MX8 family supports real hardware virtualisation, enabling asymmetric multiprocessing for demanding industrial applications.

The ready-to-use module and the appropriate development tools simplify integration of the processor technology into the customer application and optimise time-to-market, claims the distributor.  With the MSC SM2S-IMX8, Avnet Integrated believes it is meeting demand for Arm processor-based computer-on-modules (COMs), which are now also suitable for high-performance embedded applications and with high energy efficiency.

Typical applications for the robust MSC SM2S-IMX8 module are industrial automation and visualisation systems, robotics, infotainment systems and building automation. The processor module is designed for operation in the full industrial temperature range from -40 to +85 degrees C.

The 64-bit i.MX8 SoC integrated on the module contains up to eight cores. These are two Arm Cortex-A72 cores, four Arm Cortex-A53 cores and two Cortex-M4F real-time cores. Up to 8Gbyte LPDDR4 SDRAM and up to 64Gbyte eMMC flash memory are available on the module for program and data storage. Common interfaces include dual Gigabit Ethernet, PCI Express Gen 3, SATA III, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, UART, SPI and I²S Audio. Cameras can be connected via two MIPI CSI-2 interfaces. Two CAN connections and an optional on-board wireless module are available as standard. The HDMI 2.0, dual channel LVDS and DisplayPort graphics interfaces can be used to connect up to three independent, high resolution displays.

The MSC SM2-MB-EP1 development platform in Mini-ITX form factor and a starter kit are also available from Avnet Integrated, There are also board support packages for Linux and, on request, for Android, design-in support, thermal conception, and simulation.

Avnet Integrated will offer the complete i.MX8 processor family consisting of the i.MX8, i.MX8M and i.MX8M Mini variants on the SMARC 2.0™ and Qseven module form factors.
