Beacons and sensor beacons use Bluetooth 5 for secure IoT

Fujitsu Component America has added a series of Bluetooth 5 beacons and sensor beacons, based on its Bluetooth 5 FWM7BLZ20B module.

Benefits of Bluetooth 5, for example, reduced power consumption, faster communication speed, greater low energy (LE) advertising data communication capacity and an increased number of channels, compared to Bluetooth 4.1 models, are leveraged by the beacons. They also support remote settings using commands from a central unit.

The FWM8BLZ07 beacon features an embedded advertisement function that encrypts data and securely authenticates and decrypts messages by using a message authentication code (MAC).

The FWM8BLZ07A is a multi-function sensor beacon that includes embedded temperature, humidity, air pressure, illuminance, three-axis acceleration and sound-level sensors. Combinations of multiple sensors can be used in any Bluetooth environment, says Fujitsu Components, from the Bluetooth standard beacon protocol to the latest Bluetooth 5 protocol.

The beacons are based on the Nordic Semiconductor nRF52832 SoC. They are compact, and measure just 40.0 x 31.0 x 12.0mm and are in a grey housing which is adaptable for many applications, says Fujitsu Components. The units use a single CR2450 coin cell battery and include a voltage notification function that senses a voltage drop in the battery and allows users to determine the right timing for replacement.

The beacons and sensor beacons are available immediately.

Fujitsu Components America markets and distributes electronic and system components and sub-systems throughout North and South America. Products include relays, touch panels, thermal printers, wireless modules, connectors and input and pointing devices.

The company is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, USA.
