Bourns expands flat wire, shielded power inductor series

11 models have been added to the SRP0xxx shielded power inductor range by Bourns.

The low resistance, high saturation current models have a low profile (less than 2mm), metal alloy powder core and flat wire construction. According to Bourns, benefits include low copper loss, DC resistance and audible core noise as well as high current saturation. This type of shielded construction also produces low magnetic radiation offering good EMI performance and excellent temperature stability, claims Bourns.

Reliability is raised by using external laser welding between wire and terminal, which eliminates potential mechanical stress on the solder joint from the high pressure moulding process. The alpha-winding construction is also claimed to enables a wider inductance range at a given form factor while maintaining a low profile across all of the SRP0xxx’s inductance values.

The inductors are designed to meet high current density requirements in consumer electronics applications such as smartphones, tablet terminals, laptop computers, hard disk drives, solid state drives, servers, voltage regulators and compact power supply modules. The high current density means these applications typically operate at higher temperatures, which can lead to higher degradation rates. The lower DC resistance means that these inductors dissipate less power during operation, especially at higher current and switching frequencies. This helps enable a DC/DC converter or power supply to achieve higher power efficiency and meet application specifications.

All 11 shielded power inductors are available now. They are RoHS-compliant and halogen free.

Bourns manufactures position and speed sensors, circuit protection solutions, magnetic components, microelectronic modules, panel controls and resistive products. The company is headquartered in Riverside, California, USA, and serves a broad range of markets, including automotive, industrial, consumer, communications, medical (low/medium risk) and audio.
