Buck-boost DC/DC converter save power and prolongs battery life

Claimed to offer unmatched efficiency with best-in-class current consumption, the BD83070GWL is a buck-boost DC/DC converter with integrated MOSFET from Rohm.

It is intended for IoT, wearable and portable devices. The BD83070GWL meets the need for smaller components in battery-driven electronic devices that can provide the necessary design flexibility and space for integrating new functions while minimising power consumption to maximise battery life.

Rohm developed the power supply IC to meet market needs by leveraging a vertically integrated production system using in-house analogue design expertise and specialised power processes. The company already offers the low-power boost (BU33UV7NUX) and buck (BD70522GUL) power supply ICs which allow users to significantly extend the operating time of battery-powered applications, says Rohm. The new BD83070GWL expands this offering with a buck-boost IC featuring industry-leading performance, says the company.

The BD83070GWL was developed for low power, eco-friendly devices used in compact battery-driven applications. The low-RDS(on) MOSFET with 0.13 micron BiCDMOS power process combines with the low control current circuitry to achieve an industry-leading power conversion efficiency of 97 per cent during operation at 200mA load current and 2.8 microA quiescent current consumption for longer operating time in compact battery-driven devices. Rohm says the BD83070GWL can prolong battery life by as much as 1.53 times when compared to other conventional products during standby (100 microA load current).

An evaluation board integrating this converter is also available.

Target applications are coin battery equipped sets, typically used in the IoT, Li-ion battery devices, including smartphones, tablets, and PCs, battery-driven equipment such as toys and electric toothbrushes.

An evaluation board, the BD83070GWL-EVK-001 is available now. The BD83070GWL will begin sampling in October 2019.

Rohm Semiconductor develops and manufactures low power microcontrollers, power management and standard ICs, SiC diodes, MOSFETs and modules, power transistors and diodes, LEDs, passives components such as resistors, tantalum capacitors and LED display units in manufacturing plants in Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, China and Europe.
