Cable assembly bends to save space

Bending behind a connector, the NanoBend cable assembly has been introduced by Huber+Suhner to maximise performance for critical applications without compromising performance.

According to Huber+Suhner, the NanoBend can be used in small spaces in applications such as defence, aerospace and test and measurement markets where space, weight and performance are critical. The NanoBend joins the company’s MiniBend, which it calls the original ‘bend-to-the-end’ solution and with the smallest bending radii in the industry.

The cable assembly is flexible and enables tight bending where the cable and connector meet, without compromising on signal strength or stability. NanoBend is suitable for frequencies up to 65GHz and ensures strength and reliable connectivity in high stress environments, said Huber+Suhner. It is triple-shielded to minimise radio frequency leakage, which is particularly beneficial for durability in extreme conditions. NanoBend’s outer cable diameter is just 1.62mm.

Potential applications are small orbit satellites and military radar electronics. Despite the extreme bending capabilities of the cable, reliability in high-frequency signal distribution is ensured, said the company, to accommodate miniaturisation requirements and to meet strict ESA, NASA and MIL standards.

The connector is designed to meet Sensor Open System Architecture (SOSA) standards  and is compatible with existing solutions for upgrades. Specially designed connectors offer end-to-end contacts that meet common industry standards, including SMA, SMP, SK, SMPM and SMPM-T.

Swiss company Huber+Suhner develops and produces components and system solutions for electrical and optical connectivity. The company serves the three main markets: industry, communication and transportation with applications from the three technologies of radio frequency, fibre optics and low frequency. The company has a worldwide production network, with subsidiaries and representatives in over 80 countries.
