Cat5e rail data cable complies with fire regulations for rolling stock

TE Connectivity (TE) has introduced a Category 5e (Cat5e) quad high speed data cable for railway rolling stock and infrastructure. It has halogen-free flame retardant polymer insulation and complies with EN45545-2, the new European standard covering fire behaviour of materials and products in railway rolling stock.

The crosslinked outer jacket provides high resistance to chemicals, mechanical stresses and extreme temperatures, says the company. It can be supplied on its own or pre-assembled with connectors.

TE says that this addition means that the company now offers the full range of Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat7 cables, all complying with EN45545-2, offering a scope of data cables spanning 120-Ohm up to 10Gbit per second. TE can also supply the corresponding M12 connectors either as components with the cable or as finished assemblies.”

The Cat5e data cable is a quad design consisting of two pairs of 22-AWG cores. It is designed for an operating voltage of 300V. The electrical resistance of the conductor is less than or equal to 60-Ohm/km, and that of the shield is up to 120-Ohm/km. The insulation has a resistance of over 500MOhm/km (all at 20 degrees C).

TE Connectivity is a $13 billion global technology and manufacturing company that for more than 75 years has specialised in connectivity and sensor products. These are proven in the harshest environments, says the company, and have enabled advancements in transportation, industrial applications, medical technology, energy, data communications, and the home.

There are 78,000 TE employees, including more than 7,000 engineers, working alongside customers in nearly 150 countries.
