COM Express Type 7 module is designed for high performance servers

Compact modules from MSC will be highlighted at Avnet Integrated. The MSC C7B-DVL COM Express modules comply with the COM Express Type 7 standard of the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG). They are designed for server applications with high computing power, fast data transfer and low power dissipation, with up to four 10Gbit Ethernet ports, to network multiple servers, and up to 14 PCI Express lanes. The MSC C7B-DVL module family integrates an Intel Atom C3000 series server processor (“Denverton”).

The standardised, ready-to-use MSC C7B-DVL processor module family with scalable performance implements modern storage and networking applications quickly and easily, assures Avnet Integrated. Upgrading the system to higher performance requires simply replacing the module. All modules are available for seven or 15 years (long term supply) from the product launch of the processor.

Typical fields of application for the MSC C7B‑DVL rugged server module family include fog computing and edge computing, switching/routing, industrial IoT (IIoT), automated test equipment, and industrial image and video processing.

For network devices that will be used outdoors, individual modules are also specified to operate in harsh environments in the extended temperature range from -40 to +85 degrees C.

The MSC C7B-DVL COM Express Type 7 module family can be equipped with seven Intel Atom C3000 series server processor types, offering broad scalability from four to 16 processor cores. The thermal dissipation power (TDP) ranges from 17 to 31W. The processors support Intel Quick Assist Technology, up to 20Gbits per second, Intel x86 64-bit Software Support, VT-x, and VT-d. Two 260-pin SO-DIMM sockets are supplied to equip the module with fast DDR4 SDRAMs with a maximum capacity of 48Gbyte, optionally with error correction code (ECC). The integrated Infineon Trusted Platform Module TPM 2.0 provides additional security for critical network installations.

Up to five Ethernet interfaces, four with 10Gbit transfer rate and one 10/100/1000 Base-TX connector, provide high network bandwidth. Up to 14 PCI Express (PCIe) lanes enable system expansions and the connection of fast SSD memory. The PCIe lanes follow common industrial practice and are routed directly to the COM Express connector without a switch. This feature supports a simple transition to the next module generation, advises Avnet Integrated. In addition, there are two SATA 6Gbits per second interfaces, two USB 3.0, four USB 2.0 ports, and two serial high-speed connections.

To evaluate the MSC C7B-DVL family of server modules, Avnet Integrated supplies a matching Type 7 carrier board in ATX form factor and a comprehensive starter kit. The carrier board can optionally be provided with a board management controller (BMC) that supports remote maintenance.
