Common mode filter protects for high resolution displays

Combining an efficient, common mode filter and ESD protection device with a wide 10GHz differential bandwidth, the PCMFxHDMI2BA-C from Nexperia offers protection for HDMI2.1 and DisplayPort.

It is suitable for the latest HDMI 2.1 standard up to 12G FRL, where eye-diagram tests were passed even with ‘worst cable model’, says Nexperia.

Stefan Seider, Nexperia’s product manager for high-speed protection and filtering) explained: “HDMI 2.1 enables displays with higher resolution and better colours. However, this demands greater protection against interference, especially in compact wireless applications. The performance and miniature size of these two in one combination devices makes them highly suitable for ‘tv stick’ type plug-in designs.”

The integrated PCMFxHDMI2BA-C provides common mode attenuation at HDMI fundamentals of -19.4dB at 3GHz and -16dB at 6GHz. For ESD performance, it offers a clamping voltage of 7.4V at 16A transmission line pulse (5V at 8A). Time domain reflectometry (TDR) impedance dip is less than 10 Ohms for 200 pico seconds rise time. The inductance of the coil pair offers a further significant reduction of ESD peak voltages, says Nexpria, while having a low inductance for differential signals. The PCMFxHDMI2BA-C can protect and filter one, two or three differential line pairs. Footprint-compatible ESD protection devices without a filter are also available.

In addition to HDMI 2.1, the combined common mode filter and ESD protection devices suit other high speed serial interfaces including HDMI 2.0, HDMI 1.4, MIPI, DisplayPort.

Nexperia’s PCMFxHDMI2BA features wafer-level chip scale packaging which eliminates package parasitics which can impact performance, It is also very robust, capable of surviving 1500 drop tests. Devices are available now.

Nexperia has an extensive portfolio of diodes, bipolar transistors, ESD protection devices, MOSFETs, GaN FETs and analogue and logic ICs.

The company is headquartered in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. It annually ships more than 90 billion products, meeting the stringent standards set by the automotive industry and is recognised for benchmarks in efficiency – in process, size, power and performance for small packages that save valuable energy and space.
