Compact CLT inductors manage power in ADAS

The CLT32 series of power inductors have compact dimensions and are designed for “excellent electrical values,” said TDK. The design has no internal connections to increase reliability and is compact for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving systems, said the company.

There are nine types of inductor in the CLT32 series covering an inductance range of 17 to 440nH. They are designed for 13.5 to 60A saturation currents. The footprint is just 3.2 x 2.5mm with an insertion height of 2.5mm making them, according to TDK, the most compact surface mount technology power inductors in their performance class.

The inductors are constructed to operate in a temperature range of -40 to +165 degrees C, including self-heating. The AEC-Q200 certified inductors are designed with a solid copper coil over-moulded with a ferromagnetic plastic compound. The coil ends function as terminals which significantly increases reliability especially for automotive applications, claimed TDK. The solid copper coil allows the inductors to achieve a low RDC value to minimise losses. The Ohmic resistance is only 0.39 mOhm at an inductance value of 17nH.

High-performance processors used in ADA and autonomous driving require currents in the double digit Ampere range. Power management ICs (PMICs) are used as power supplies that provide these high currents and power inductors are key components at the outputs to stabilise the current. The CLT32 series is designed for switching frequencies of up to 10MHz and meets future requirements placed on DC/DC converters with high clock rates.

TDK was established in 1935 to commercialise ferrite, a key material in electronic and magnetic products. TDK‘s portfolio includes passive components such as ceramic, aluminum electrolytic and film capacitors, as well as magnetics, high-frequency, and piezo and protection devices. The product spectrum also includes sensors and sensor systems such as temperature and pressure, magnetic, and MEMS sensors as well as power supplies and energy devices. Products are marketed under the product brands TDK, Epcos, InvenSense, Micronas, Tronics and TDK-Lambda.

TDK focuses on demanding markets in automotive, industrial and consumer electronics, and information and communication technology. The company has a network of design and manufacturing locations and sales offices in Asia, Europe, and in North and South America.
