Constant voltage flyback LED driver IC is ‘future-proof’ design
Combining a constant voltage quasi-resonant flyback controller with algorithms for high power factor (above 0.9) and low total harmonic distortion (THD) of less than 15 per cent, the XDPL8218 has been added to the XDP LED controller series by Infineon Technologies.
The highly integrated XDPL8218 for cost effective LED drivers has a future proof design, says Infineon and is particularly suitable for the primary side of dual-stage LED designs with a DC/DC stage at the secondary. The XDPL8218 manages wide load ranges, responds quickly and stably to dynamic load changes, and enables high efficiency over a wide output range, says the company.
The LED driver IC supports full functionality for both AC and DC input in the nominal input voltage range of 100 to 277V AC or 127 to 430V DC. The integrated digital control automatically selects the optimal operation mode for the actual operating condition, e.g. quasi-resonant, discontinuous conduction or active burst modes.
The XDPL8218’s digital parameter configuration enables real-time design changes with little effort to shorten design cycles and reduce time-to-market. The LED driver IC can be used for multiple board variants, which reduces the number of stock keeping units required.
This XDPL8218 has a configurable set of protection features. For example, for adverse operating conditions and instable grids, there is an in-built configurable brownout and -in function. All relevant potential error conditions are monitored and protected, including under- and over-voltage for input and output, open load and output shorted. An adaptive temperature guard additionally ensures the optimal thermal management.
