DC/DC converters meet EN 50155 for railway applications

To accommodate a host of electronic systems for safe operation as well as passenger comfort and convenience, a typical railway carriage distributes either 72 or 110V DC of battery power to systems which often require lower and regulated operating voltages via DC/DC converters.

The main battery power may also fluctuate when feeding higher power systems onboard the train, requiring a DC/DC converter with a wide input range to handle variations in voltage.

Gresham Power Electronics, announces the availability of the Polytron extra wide input range DC/DC converters, specifically designed for railway applications. They can accommodate a broad range of common battery and bus distribution voltages while operating with wide input voltage tolerances and fluctuations, says the company.

The OFQC40 and OFQC60 Series 40 and 60W quarter-brick DC/DC converters feature a wide 12:1 input voltage range covering potential distribution voltages of 9.0 to 75V DC or 14 to 160V DC, according to the EN50155 standard.

Output voltages are 5.0, 12, 15, 24, 28, 48 and 53V DC, with isolation voltage up to 3000V AC. Efficiencies are to up to 92 per cent. The operating baseplate temperature range is -40 to +105 degrees C, and heat sink options are available.

The converters protect against over current, over voltage, under voltage, short circuits and over temperature. They are RoHS- and REACH-compliant.

Gresham designs and manufactures defence power systems to provide modified standard or full custom power supply designs when required. Gresham can also supply a range of defence power products for land-based and vehicle applications to complement its naval power systems that are used by over 20 different countries throughout the world.

The complete product range includes OEM and external power supplies, including encapsulated, for medical, industrial, defence, communications, broadcast systems advanced multi-media applications and LED lighting. CompactPCI, hot-swap power shelves and products for telecomms as well as static frequency converters, DC UPS, distributed power systems and DC/AC inverters for naval defence markets.
