Detect switch is for safety-critical automotive and industrial applications

Electromechanical switch specialist, C&K, has released the SSW Detect switch, describing it as the next generation double-pole double-throw (DPDT) device that will enable customers to improve functional safety in their electronic designs.

The SSW Detect switch is defined by built-in redundancy, self-failure detection and lack of bi-stability with controlled switching time.

The switch can be used in the automotive industry in applications, such as electric parking brakes (EPB) and x-by-wire, Both applications require functional safety in accordance with the ISO 26262 automotive standard. The switches can also be used where low-level signals are used. The switch is sealed to IP67 to prevent liquid or dust ingress. It is also stable mechanically and electrically, with the durability needed to withstand extreme operating temperatures (from -40 to +85 degree C) and uncompromising operational environments, claims C&K.

The switch is supplied on tape and reel packaging, in a surface mount format with gull wing terminations for ease of integration. The vertical detect switch supports low-level switching (5V to 1mA) and has low acoustics for snap-acting devices. It has fully switching travel compatibility with existing products on the market, making it simple to replace previous switch devices without needing to alter the fundamental design, says C&K. By using horizontal cam actuation, the switch enables short travel of mobile contacts, to provide fast switching times of less than 15 milli seconds.

The SSW Detect switch’s patented design ensures that contacts are working in one direction only in controlled distances, for low stress and constant contact pressure. These characteristics enhance performance with stable contact resistance, accurate and repeatable switching heights, and high life expectancy of 300,000 electrical cycles, even under harsh environment stress conditions, says C&K.

The SSW Detect switch series is available for delivery in just eight weeks.

C&K was founded in 1928, and is one of the world’s most trusted brands of high-quality electromechanical switches. C&K offers more than 55,000 standard products and 8.5 million switch combinations to companies that design, manufacture and distribute electronics products. Its tactile, pushbutton, snap-acting, toggle, rocker, detect, DIP, keyswitch, navigation, rotary, slide, switchlock, thumbwheel, smart card readers, high-rel connectors and custom assemblies are used in automotive, industrial, IoT, wearables, medical, telecomms, consumer products, aerospace, and point of sale (POS) terminals.
