Fast recovery diodes shush air conditioners and EV charging stations

Rohm Semiconductor’s fourth generation of fast recovery diodes has been designed for low loss performance but also low noise characteristics.

The 650V RFL and RFS series of fast recovery diodes feature low forward voltage (VF) and fast reverse recovery time (trr) respectively, and low noise characteristics. They are intended for industrial and consumer equipment that handle large amounts of power, such as air conditioners and EV charging stations.

EV charging stations require not only high electrical efficiency but also a reduced workload for noise countermeasures in the circuit design. Rohm said that these diodes combine low VF for more efficient operation with fast trr characteristics that provide less loss and low noise during switching off.

The low VF RFL series reduces VF by approx. 3.2 per cent and trr by about 8.3 per cent over the conventional RFN series. The high speed RFS series reduces VF by approximately 17.9 per cent compared with the conventional RFUH series.

The diodes are in mass production now and available through online distributors, Digi-Key Mouser and Farnell.

Rohm expects to add to the initial models offered in both the RFL and RFS series but did not specify a roadmap or timescale.
