Ferrite chip beads break the mould for automotive applications, says Murata

Operating at up to 175 degrees C, for automotive applications, the BLM18KN_EH series of ferrite chip beads are a world-first, says Murata.

The BLM18KN_EH series of ferrite chip beads deliver noise suppression in power lines at temperatures up to 175 degrees C and are suitable for use in automotive equipment such as engine and transmission electronic control units (ECUs) and turbo motor controllers. They meet AEC-Q200 qualification requirements.

Electrification in vehicles means the demand for compact, lightweight and robust electronic control substrates continues to grow, particularly as more and more ECUs are positioned closer to the engine. The BLM18KN_EH series of ferrite chip beads support automotive engineers to take direct power line noise suppression measures, instead of implementing them in cooler areas, which was the only available option before their introduction, which complicates the design.

Murata uses a ferrite material that does not lose its magnetic properties at high temperatures and an electrode to suppress temperature-related deterioration in the construction of the BLM18KN_EH chip beads. Energisation is possible at 150 degrees C and the chip beads have low DC resistance, which reduces heat generated, increasing efficiency.

The BLM18KN_EH chip beads are available in 0603 inch size with dimensions down to 1.6 x 0.8mm. The devices have low direct current resistance (Rdc) for compatibility with large currents, for low power consumption, advises Murata.

Over the wide operating temperature range, the rated current is from 740 to 4,000mA (-55 to +125 degrees C), 490 to 2,600mA (+150 degrees C) and 10mA (+175 degrees C). Typical impedance at 100MHz ranges from 26 to 1,000Ohm.

Murata manufactures electronic components, modules, and devices. Its product portfolio includes ceramic capacitors, resistors/thermistors, inductors/chokes, timing devices, buzzers, sensors and EMI suppression filters.

The company is known as a global ceramic capacitor manufacturer, but also supplies Bluetooth and Wi-Fi modules, board-mount DC/DC converters and manufactures standard and custom AC/DC power supplies.

Established in 1944, Murata is headquartered in Japan and has European offices in Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.
