Fibre optic transmitter is hermetically-sealed for challenging environments

The FDE851HLBF infra red (IR) transmitter helps ensure long-term reliability in challenging environments, says OMC.

The hermetically-sealed FDE851HLBF IR transmitter diode is designed for use in applications where long-term reliability is paramount, says the company. The 850nm emitter has a hermetically sealed, TO-can body with glass optical window to help protect the device internals from atmospheric conditions. The fast rise and fall times allow high speed operation in the tens of MHz. Integral micro-optics couple light efficiently into multi-mode glass optical fibres as small as 50 micron, for a typical launch power of 30 microW at 100mA into 50/125 fibre.

Many fibre-optic emitters use of a clear plastic cap which is pressed on to the device header. This provides an element of physical protection to the LED chip, wire-bond and internal optics, but it is uncommon for such a cap to provide a hermetic seal. A hermetic seal can protect against the potential long-term effects of environmental characteristics such as humidity on the device internals which are important where long service-life is expected. The hermetically sealed housing of the FDE851HLBF eliminates this variable, as air from the operational environment cannot reach the internal components.

The company has also added the FDE2850 emitter. This is a high power, high speed, fibre-optic transmitter optimised for 200 micron glass fibre systems which the company says it is able to produce on lead times much shorter than typical industry norms for this type of device.

To evaluate and incorporate optical fibre in microprocessor-based designs, OMC also offers the H19 Fibre Optic Shield, a microprocessor shield compatible with Arduino Uno.

Founded in the mid-1980s as the Fibre-Data Group, OMC is one of the longest-established specialist manufacturers of optoelectronics in Europe. It is headquartered in Cornwall, UK.

The company is accredited to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 and is a pioneer in the development, manufacture and application of LED and fibre-optic technologies for a range of industries and companies worldwide. It places a major focus on research and development, engineering and innovation.

OMC has four key manufacturing divisions: Fibre Optics; LED Backlights and Optical Mouldings; Discrete Optoelectronic Components; and Semiconductor (LED) Lighting Components.
