Flex Power Modules and onsemi develop small intermediate bus converter

At this week’s 2022 Open Compute Project in San Jose, California, Flex Power Modules will launch the BMR313 intermediate bus converter (IBC). It has been developed in collaboration with onsemi.

The non-isolated and unregulated BMR313 delivers a peak power rating of 3kW in a small package, measuring just 23.4 x 17.8 x 7.65mm, yet it is capable of yielding 908W/cm3 power density. Input voltage range is 40 to 60V and the 4:1 input to output ration yields an output of 10 to 15V.

The IBC also has 97.3 per cent efficiency at 54V input and continuous output power capability of 1kW. The part is thermally optimised for cold wall mounting on the top side.

The BMR313 is offered in the industry-standard LGA footprint and pin-out.

Flex Power Modules worked with onsemi in the design of the BMR313 to leverage the advantages of the FD6000, onsemi’s latest generation, intermediate bus digital controller. The FD6000 supports integrated PMBus telemetry, required in the product target application of data processing. The controller uses onsemi’s resonant DC transformer (DCX) topology, operating at higher than 1MHz while maintaining high efficiency, reported Flex Power Modules. The onsemi controller can be utilised for future variants of the IBC range with higher and lower input to output conversion ratios.

The collaboration resulted in achieving the power density for space-constrained applications, commented Mikael Appelberg, CTO of Flex Power Modules, with onsemi providing support, customising firmware to Flex Power Modules’ specific requirements.

The level of innovation in terms of energy efficiency and density means that the Flex Power Modules BMR313 and onsemi’s FD6000 are setting a new standard in powering the cloud, added Roberto Guerrero, general manager of the Cloud Power Solutions business unit at onsemi.

Flex Power Modules has been developing power modules for more than 40 years. It has automated manufacturing and products are backed up by ISO 9001/14001 certification and technical support.
