Infineon Technologies Bipolar adds pressure contact technology to thyristor modules

A redesign of its 60 mm thyristor/diode modules has resulted in the addition of pressure contact technology. The Eco Block family addresses the demand for cost-efficient larger modules for battery chargers, static and bypass switches and windmills, says Infineon Technologies Bipolar. The modules can also be used for soft starters and as rectifiers for drives and uninterruptable power-supplies (UPS). Its higher junction temperature means they are also able to be specified in applications with air-cooled designs.

The Eco Block modules use pressure contact technology while stripping down costly extras, says Infineon. They are claimed to provide best-in-class thyristor and diode blocking stability leading to high reliability and optimising lifetime. The pressure contact technology guarantees a short-on-fail feature, which in return prevents arcing, explains Infineon. This allows for simplified safety designs in terms of unit shielding and fusing effort. The 60mm Eco Block modules have a high overload capability to help minimise failure rates and reduce system cost.

The 60mm Eco Block family with pressure contact technology includes several variants. All modules are offered in the topologies thyristor/thyristor and thyristor/diode with a blocking voltage of 1,600 or 2,200 V and in current ratings from 420 to 630A.

Additional module types in 70 mm are planned for release during 2019. Infineon Technologies Bipolar has revealed some details of the next extension modules; they will have pre-applied thermal interface material (TIM) to optimise performance and keep customer’s production fast and clean, assures the company.
