InnoSwitch3-AQ flyback switcher ICs increase headroo for EVs

Greater headroom for 400 and 800V electric vehicle (EV) inverter, battery management and climate control applications, is promised by Power Integrations as it introduces a 900V member of its InnoSwitch3-AQ flyback switcher IC family.

The InnoSwitch3-AQ family combines primary and secondary controllers with safety-rated feedback circuitry in a single IC. This allows accurate output voltage regulation, low component count and configuration options for operation over the wide input voltage range of 30 to 1,200V, says Power Integrations.

Edward Ong, senior product marketing manager at Power Integrations explained the reason behind the introduction of the 900V INN3996CQ Ics. “New 400V system designs for electric vehicles require higher operating voltages to account for fault conditions and transients. The 900V INN3996CQ ICs provide plenty of voltage headroom and meet the Automotive Electronics Council strict requirements for qualification ensuring safe and reliable operation in the demanding automotive application. Using a StackFET approach, the new device is suitable for 900V and greater bus designs.”

The constant voltage (CV) regulated AEC-Q100-qualified InnoSwitch3-AQ switcher ICs achieve up to 90 per cent efficiency across the load range and consume less than 15mW under no-load conditions. Output power is up to 20W at 85 degrees C ambient temperature and 400V DC input for the 900V family. Devices incorporate a multi-mode quasi-resonant (QR) / CCM / DCM flyback controller, 900V switch, and Power Integrations’ high speed FluxLink communications link. The result is accurate regulation in the compact InSOP24 package and reinforced isolation up to 5,500m altitude, said Power Integrations. InnoSwitch3-AQ ICs operate down to 30V DC, enabling automotive designers to use the device in traction inverter emergency power supply applications.

Devices in the InnoSwitch3-AQ family include multiple protection features for automotive applications including input over-voltage and under-voltage protection, output over-voltage and over-current limiting, and over-temperature shutdown.

Power Integrations also offers a design reference, DER-889Q, to describe a 15W power supply that supports 30 to 1,200V DC input and 12V / 1.25A output.

There is also the DER-859Q (30 to 921V DC) which describes the operation of InnoSwitch3-AQ in 800V bus applications delivering up to 30W. Both designs employ PI’s StackFET technology. The additional circuitry may be omitted for 400V DC designs.

The InnoSwitch3-AQ INN3996CQ ICs are available now directly from Power Integrations or one of its authorised worldwide distributors i.e. Digikey, Farnell, Mouser, and RS Components.
