Intel launches 12th Gen Intel Core i9-12900KS to turbo-charge content creation
Described as the world’s fastest desktop processor, the 12th Gen Intel Core i9-12900KS delivers up to 5.5GHz max turbo frequency — in spec with Intel Thermal Velocity Boost. It also features Intel Adaptive Boost Technology (Intel ABT). The processor is Intel’s 12th Gen performance hybrid architecture and the ability to reach 5.5GHz on up to two cores gives extreme gamers the ability to maximise performance, commented Marcus Kennedy, general manager of Gaming, Creator & Esports at Intel.
The unlocked i9-12900KS processor has 16 cores (eight Performance cores and eight Efficient cores) and 24 threads. In addition to up to 5.5GHz max turbo frequency, it has 150W processor base power and 30MB Intel Smart Cache for gaming power and performance.
The processor also includes PCIe Gen 5.0 and 4.0 support with up to DDR5 4800 Mtransfers per second and DDR4 3200 Mtransfers per second support. PCIe 5.0 and 4.0 support broadens the peripheral choices and how they are configured, Intel advised.
Many users replace either the storage drive or graphics card at some point in the lifetime of a system. PCIe 5.0 support ensures that SSDs and GPUs released in the next few years will be able to be selected and used to their full capability.
Additionally, 20 CPU PCIe lanes give a system’s two most important peripherals — the GPU and SSD — a more direct connection to the CPU, potentially reducing latency.
It’s difficult to predict what new peripherals anyone might want a year or two down the line, but 12th Gen systems are designed to get the optimal performance from them, said Intel.
The chipset is compatible with existing Z690 motherboards with the latest BIOS recommended for the best gaming experience, recommended Intel.
The special edition processor will be available from April 5. with a recommended customer price starting at $739. It can be found at retailers worldwide as a boxed processor and integrated into systems from Intel’s channel and OEM partners.
