IoT gateway harnesses integrated NPU for machine learning

Powered by the Arm NXP i.MX8M processor family, the SRG-IMX8P is the latest IoT gateway released by Aaeon. It includes the Arm NXP i.MX8M Plus quad-core Cortex processors, 8Gbyte onboard DDR4 and I/O. Aaeon said that the SRG-IMX8P makes edge-cloud communication “more flexible than ever before”.

The Arm NXP i.MX8M Plus quad-core Cortex-A53 and Cortex-M7 processors within the SRG-IMX8P harness the benefits of an integrated neural processing unit (NPU) capable of producing 2.3TOPS. The inclusion of the Arm Cortex-M7 processor offers real-time calculation functionality to enhance machine learning, to reduce visual inferencing time for object detection to just 13ms, said Aaeon.

The SRG-IMX8P is also equipped with an onboard DDR4L system memory of up to 8Gbyte, 16Gbyte eMMC storage and a Micro SD slot for further system storage expansion.

Differentiating features of the SRG-IMX8P are two USB 3.0, two RJ-45 GbE, and two CAN-FD ports. These enable configuration for advanced edge gateways in industry 4.0 projects such as vehicle assembly and factory automation applications, advised Aaeon. The USB 3.0 and RJ-45 LAN ports support sophisticated camera and sensor peripherals, while the CAN-FD slots enable users to transmit and receive sensor data via the SRG-IMX8P’s I/O directly. This negates the need for USB-to-CANBus conversion.

The SRG-IMX8P has a wide operating temperature range of -20 to +70 degrees C and has a wide power input range of 9.0 to 36V. The system’s wide temperature range enables it to be deployed in any industrial setting, said Aaeon. Its power input range enables it to be used in in-vehicle applications.

The SRG-IMX8P has already entered mass production, and is available for purchase.

Established in 1992, Aaeon designs and manufactures industrial IoT and AI edge solutions. Aaeon provides reliable, high-quality computing platforms including industrial motherboards and systems, rugged tablets, embedded AI edge systems, uCPE network appliances and LoRaWAN / WWAN solutions.
