LED/LCD controller has 100:1 dimming ratio

For use in applications where a constant voltage or constant current is required to drive displays and backlights with a dimming ratio of 100:1, Diodes has introduced the AL3353.

The LED/LCD 40V max input boost controller can be used as a backlight driver for LCD TVs, LCD monitors, and flat panel displays, as well as an LED driver for commercial lighting applications.

The AL3353 is a multi-purpose boost controller with a wide input voltage of 9.0 to 40V, allowing it to adapt to common supply voltages, such as 12, 24, and 36V, without further configuration or loss of efficiency. The AL3353 also includes circuit protection based on proprietary technology.

Diodes’ dynamic linearity compensation technique uses an offset cancellation chopping circuit to maintain linearity across temperature and process variations. This patent-pending technology accepts a digital PWM input and converts to an internal analogue signal to control the dimming level, which operates from one to 100 per cent dimming range, or a 100:1 ratio. This is significantly wider than the dimming range offered by most boost drivers available today, explains Diodes.

In addition to a wide input voltage range and its dimming capabilities, the AL3353 features protection designed specifically for the target applications. This includes diode and inductor short protection, LED cathode short-to-GND protection, LED-open protection and power MOSFET over-current protection. Other protection features are under-voltage lock-out, output over-voltage and over-temperature protection, and Vout-short protection.

The AL3353 is available in the SO-8 package.

Diodes manufactures application specific standard products within the broad discrete, logic, analogue and mixed-signal semiconductor markets. Diodes serves the consumer electronics, computing, communications, industrial, and automotive markets, providing diodes, rectifiers, transistors, MOSFETs, protection devices, function-specific arrays, single gate logic, amplifiers and comparators, Hall-effect and temperature sensors, power management devices, including LED drivers, AC/DC converters and controllers, DC/DC switching and linear voltage regulators, and voltage references along with special function devices, such as USB power switches, load switches, voltage supervisors, and motor controllers. It also supplies timing, connectivity, switching, and signal integrity products for high-speed signals.
