Lightweight, high-current relay saves space and weight

Designed to save space and weight within 12V battery disconnect applications, the 12V Battery Disconnect Relay is available from TE Connectivity.

The relay for automotive high-current applications extends TE’s range of high-current (HC) relays that can be used in automotive and industrial applications.

The 12V BDR is a bi-stable high-current relay specifically for higher current switching. Designed for the increasing number of relay applications with particularly high-power requirements, it enables a continuous current of 200A at 85 degrees C.

Dimensions are 50 x 50 x 26mm and weight is 125g, claimed to provide “significant” space and weight savings.  According to TE, automotive manufacturers who design in the BDR 12V can expect to save up to 20 per cent of space within the battery management module compared to earlier product generations.

Peak current capability of up to 3000A and a maximum shock load of up to 150g ensure safe power switching, enabling use in harsh environments.

Typical applications are vehicle battery disconnection, electric heating elements and the switching of motors and pumps. The high current relay is also suitable for start-stop applications.

TE Connectivity has produced connectors and sensors for over 75 years. Its products are proven in the harshest environments, says the company and have enabled advancements in transportation, industrial applications, medical technology, energy, data communications, and the home.
