Low profile crystal suits smartcard applications

Epson’s FC-12D kHz crystal has a low profile of only 0.35mm (maximum) enabling height critical applications such as smartcards to meet the ISO 7810 size standard.

Epson’s photolithographic processing technology enables a sub-miniature size of 2.05 x 1.25 x 0.35mm3 and delivers what is claimed to be best-in-class equivalent series resistance (ESR) of 75kOhm maximum, which is vital for fast start up and low power.

Smartcards operate from a small battery and the FC-12D is designed to achieve low sensitivity to load changes. Additionally, smartcards are subject to bending and ESD stress. To address this, the FC-12D features a ceramic package and a patented three-point crystal mount. For ESD shielding, FC-12D uses a four-pin layout with a GND pin connected to a Faraday shield.

FC-12D is available at 32.768 kHz with frequency tolerance from ±10 to ±20 parts per million at 25 degree C and load capacitance from six to 15pF.
