Magnetic field antenna scales for automotive comms

Designed for passive keyless entry/ passive entry/passive start (PKE/ PEPS) LF emitter antennae for the automotive market, the KGEA-MRHPM series of mid-range antennae are claimed to be optimised for LF emitter antennae for automotive RFID.

Most of the vehicles currently manufactured in the world with a keyless entry system (KES) use several short antennae. Depending on the quality of the vehicle and the system, three to six are used in the door handles, interior, boot and/or bumper locations, depending on the size of the car.

Current technology trends push the car side to reduce number of the antennae, to improve electrical and mechanical performance. This requires manufacturers to transition from four to six short range antennae to three mid-range antennae, and ultimately to just one or two long range antennae, explains Premo.

The KGEA-MRHPM series mid-range antennae have been designed to reduce the number of antennae compared to the total number short antennae with equal or better performance reading distance and H-field around the whole vehicle, and with the best guarantees of robustness: both mechanical and IP69K or a better waterproof grade for the automotive market.

It preserves all the advantages of mid-range antennae while keeping all the favourable features of the short-range antennae, says Premo; i.e. cost effective, mechanically robust and thermally stable.

The antenna is highly recommended when high waterproof protection IP (IP69K) are required and for when high mechanical loads (inflection, torsion and drop tests) are expected. The part is covered with thermoplastic HPM (high pressure moulding) technology, using a Premo-patented technique where there is no point of union between different plastics (bobbin and final over-moulding), for a completely water-proof antenna.

Premo adds that another advantage is that the built-in connector (integrated into the HPM over-moulding process) avoids the need for assembly cables and an external connector, reducing bill of materials, cost and easing assembly, says the company.

The KGEA-MRHPM measures 168 x 16mm and 11.65mm high. High field magnetic strength is 140.5dB microV/m at 2App at three meters(ref)) and HPM (full over-moulded, built-in connector). They also have high temperature stability cores, protected against magnetostriction using low co-efficient thermal expansion (CTE) materials.

The antenna meets the AEC-Q200 (specific automotive quality standard) and can be considered as universal mid-range antenna suitable to fit in any car location (interior, exterior, dry and/or wet zone) using always the same fixing method and same connector.
