Maxim MAX77655 is smallest SIMO PMIC yet

Claimed to provide the highest number of output channels and to reduce overall product size by 70 per cent, the MAX77655 single-inductor multiple output (SIMO) power management IC (PMIC) from Maxim Integrated targets portable wearables, IoT sensor nodes and health monitors.

Maxim claims that it provides the highest-density power solution for extremely compact next-generation devices. It operates with 700mA across four buck-boost channels and requires only one inductor to contribute to the reduced total size of 17mm².

It is intended for use by designers of small, portable devices such as wearables, internet of things (IoT) sensor nodes and health monitors who are looking to increase computing capability, memory and sensor resources. The MAX77655 SIMO PMIC shares a single inductor among all four supplies in a single 3.95mm² IC. Its high efficiency helps to extend battery life by providing 90 per cent regulator efficiency during moderate to heavy load conditions and consuming only 6.9 microA of quiescent current during light load conditions.

For additional power management platforms regarding systems requiring less than 500mA, Maxim Integrated has also introduced two new configurable PMICs – the MAX77643 and MAX77642. These ICs are claimed to offer the industry’s highest efficiency at 93 per cent from a single inductor and a three-output buck-boost regulator with a 150mA LDO/load switch.

The high power density allows wearable and AI edge manufacturers to boost the intelligence quotient and data point collection for devices, observed Karthi Gopalan, director, Mobile Power business unit at Maxim Integrated. “Designers can now pack an array of precision sensors with the highest processing power, while delivering on the most critical customer need of maximum battery life in the smallest form factor,” she added.

The MAX77655 is available now from Maxim Integrated and authorised distributors. Maxim also offers the MAX77655EVKIT# evaluation kit for development.

Maxim Integrated provides a broad portfolio of semiconductors, tools and support to deliver essential analogue solutions including efficient power, precision measurement, reliable connectivity and robust protection along with intelligent processing. Its customer base is the design community in automotive, communications, consumer, data centre, healthcare, industrial and IoT markets.
