Merus Class D audio amplifier has multi-level switching, says Farnell
Infineon’s Merus range of Class D audio amplifiers use pioneering multi-level switching technology to increase audio performance and reduce power loss during operation, explains Farnell, which has just added the amplifiers to its line card.
According to the distributor, the range of amplifiers offers improved power efficiency, decreased size, weight, electromagnetic interference (EMI) and lower overall cost than traditional solutions on the market.
The Merus Class D amplifiers can be used in battery-operated speakers, wireless and docking speakers, soundbars, multi-room systems and home theatre systems. The Merus portfolio includes fully integrated monolithic audio amplifier ICs, multi-chip audio amplifier modules (MCMs), as well as discrete audio amplifier driver IC and power MOSFETs, scalable to meet the most stringent and demanding application needs.
The MA12040P is for 4.0 to 18V supply voltage range and the MA12070P for 4.0 to 26V supply voltage range. They both have an embedded digital power management scheme with an algorithm that dynamically adjusts switching frequency and modulation to optimise power loss and EMI across the output power range. Integrated digital-to-analogue converters (DACs) enable digital I2S audio stream input. The amplifiers support sample rates from 44.1 to 192kHz and offer protection against DC, short circuits, over-temperature and under-voltage situations. Power mode profiles allow the user to use the multi-level switching technique for very low power loss or very high audio performance. For analogue input, there are the MA12040 and MA12070 amplifiers.
The evaluation kit, Eval Audio MA12070P contains all the elements needed to evaluate the Merus digital input multi-level class D amplifier 2×80W (MA12070P). The IC is specifically targeted for high performance filterless and heatsink-free audio applications. It can be used for voice controlled audio and professional audio where it is essential to maximise dynamic range and audio performance while minimising power dissipation and power loss, advises Farnell.
The Merus Class D audio amplifiers are available from Farnell in EMEA, Newark in North America and element14 in APAC.
