Miniaturised gate drive transformers save space in planar package

Miniature gate drive transformers have been designed by Vishay Custom Magnetics to save space in high power military and aerospace, industrial, and medical applications. The MGDT series have a compact 20.57 x 18.42mm planar package with a low 11.43mm profile. They offer low losses and 8.0mm minimum creepage and clearance, adds Vishay Custom Magnetics.

The transformers are available with surface-mount or through-hole terminations and multiple turn ratios. They drive high side MOSFETs and IGBTs on buses up to 1200V. Compared to traditional bobbin and toroidal winding technology, the transformers’ planar package occupies 40 per cent less board space, and has a 30 per cent lower profile. They also meet or exceed most safety agency requirements, adds Vishay.

Operating over a frequency range from 100 to 500kHz, the transformers are optimised for isolated half-bridge, full-bridge, and dual active forward power converters. The MGDT series provides high dielectric strength to 3750V AC from drive to gate, leakage inductance of 0.5-microH, and a continuous operating temperature range of -40 to +85 degree C. The devices feature tight unit-to-unit consistency and excellent rise time characteristics.

Samples and production quantities of the MGDT transformers are available now, with lead times of 8 to 10 weeks for large orders.

Vishay Intertechnology is a manufacturer of discrete semiconductors (diodes, MOSFETs, and infrared optoelectronics) and passive electronic components (resistors, inductors, and capacitors). These components are used in virtually all types of electronic devices and equipment, in the industrial, computing, automotive, consumer, telecommunications, military, aerospace, power supplies, and medical markets.
