MonTitan SSB is user-programmable
For data centre and enterprise storage, the MonTital PCIe Gen5x4 solid state device (SSD) is user programmable. Silicon Motion Technology said it has created the Montitan with a purpose-built ASIC and firmware architecture optimised for performance and quality of service. It said, the layered firmware stack enables the development of customer differentiated solutions with flexibility and accelerated time to market, while reducing engineering costs.
“SSD storage solutions evolve as new data centre challenges emerge. This then demands a change in storage platforms and operating models,” said Nelson Duann, Silicon Motion’s senior vice president of marketing and R&D.
The user-programmable PCIe Gen5 SSD uses Silicon Motion’s third generation NVMe controller family, the SM8366, supporting OCP data centre NVMe SSD and NVMe 2.0 specifications. There is also proprietary PerformaShape and NANDCommand technology.
PerformaShape provides ASIC-based QoS sets using hardware isolation to ensure maximum bandwidth performance while maximising user-defined individual performance elements (e.g. quality of service, latency, read-read, read-write, power).
NANDCommand maximises the enterprise performance of next-generation NAND geometries with LDPC (low-density parity-check) error correction and endurance extension for QLC (quad level cell) and beyond, according to Silicon Motion.
The MonTitan SM8366 ASIC is a dual-ported enterprise and data centre PCIe Gen5 x4 NVMe controller with 16 channels supporting up to 2400Mtransfers per second. The SM8366 provides 4K sequential (above 14Gbytes per second) and random (above 3.0M IOPS or input/output operations per second) SSD performance and contains a scalable single / dual channel 40bit DDR4-3200 / DDR5-4800 DRAM interface.
The MonTitan SSD platform (the SM8366 standards-based reference hardware design kits and licensable turnkey and layered firmware stacks) will be sampling to early engagement partners in Q4 2022.
Silicon Motion supplies NAND flash controllers for solid state storage devices for servers, PCs and other client devices as well as controllers for eMMC/UFS mobile embedded storage used in smartphones, IoT and other applications. It also supplies customised hyperscale data centres and specialises in industrial and automotive SSDs. Customers include NAND flash vendors, storage device module makers and leading OEMs.
